Both were handed tough tests in their opening games last weekend and both crashed and burned, West Brom losing 6-0 at Chelsea and Newcastle going down 3-0 at Manchester United. If you trust that “top of Premier League v top of Championship form line”, Blackpool could well be on for a hiding here.
Arsenal took a rather fortunate point from Anfield thanks to a late goalkeeping error that gifted them a 1-1 draw last Sunday. Fabregas never made the starting line up, Arshavin looked well short of match sharpness and the likes of Walcott and van Persie were only used as second half substitutes. With another week of training under their belts you would expect Arsenal to “come on for the run”.
Arsenals home form against sides who finished outside of the top 8 of the league table last season makes impressive reading: Portsmouth (4-1), Wigan (4-0), Blackburn (6-2), Birmingham (3-1), Stoke (2-0), Hull (3-0), Bolton (4-2), Sunderland (2-0), Burnley (3-1), West Ham (2-0), Wolves (1-0), Fulham (4-0). In summary, they beat everyone outside of the top 8 with only Wolves managing to stay within a 1 goal margin and 8 of those 12 matches delivered over 3.5 goals.
